A Lincoln Unified Family

I’m Ron Skaggs, and I’m running for Lincoln School Board Trustee, Area 5. The schools in Area 5 include John R. Williams, Colonial Heights, and Sierra Middle School. I share my backyard fence with the Lincoln High School stadium on Burnside Way. My wife of 44 years, Karen, and I have raised our six children in this home, and all six of them went through the Lincoln Unified system. Our six children include four adopted children and two biological children, including one adopted internationally from Korea.

Professional and Community Service

I’ve worked for Condor Earth for over 30 years as a managing civil and geotechnical engineer, and I serve on the Board of Directors. I serve on our Lincoln Village 5 Homeowners Association (HOA) and as the Neighborhood Watch Captain. My community involvement has included Chief Umpire and Team Coach for Sunset Little League, Chair of the San Joaquin Engineers Council and Scholarship Committee, and volunteer Court Appointed Special Advocate for foster children (CASA).

Why Is Ron Running?

I am running for Lincoln School Board because my family benefited from the schooling, academic rigor, career education, sports, arts, music, theater, and other extracurricular opportunities provided to students. Lincoln provides these opportunities to students of various cultural and economic backgrounds. I want to ensure that this legacy continues and grows with our neighborhoods.

Why Does Ron Support Public Education?

As a parent, school volunteer, volunteer CASA, and employer, I see firsthand the importance of a quality education to prepare students for a career and/or additional education after high school.

How Do Ron’s Goals Align with Lincoln Unified School District Goals?

I support the District goal of every student being career- or college-ready. I also support the plan for a new middle school to address the shortage in capacity at Sierra Middle School. Our state test scores need improvement, and the District is working toward that goal as well. We need to better engage parents in their students’ education. Our current engagement with parents is not achieving the level required for better student performance.

What Is the Impact of Poverty on Education?

I have seen the impact of poverty in my children’s friend groups. I see the lasting impact of poverty during K-12 education in the lives of adults. Poverty is not a choice. Education should be accessible to all families. Supporting such access may include transportation, food security, and accommodations for family schedules.

How Do We Retain Quality Teachers?

Teachers are our best experts on this subject. Let’s start by listening to our teachers. Issues that can impact our teachers include fair pay, support for teachers in student discipline, access to training, and opportunities for advancement based on merit. Without effective teachers, we don’t get effective learning.

How Do We Support Students with Diverse Backgrounds?

Student support begins with equal treatment and responding appropriately to prejudice expressed against any student group. Student support and acceptance begins at the Board level and is implemented through District policy and practice.

How Do We Support Students with Different Learning Needs?

Lincoln Unified offers a range of educational pathways, including conventional education, high-achievement academics, career education, and alternative education methods. These approaches should continue to be supported at the Board level.

How Does a Board Member Support a Positive Relationship with District Administration and School Employees?

Again, it starts with listening. Each partner must have the opportunity to express their views and positions fully and without hindrance. It’s okay not to agree, but it’s not okay to limit communication because we don’t agree.
